Rockies to the Red Rocks
Even though it is one of the most scenic train trips in the United States, the Rockies to the Red Rocks route is sometimes overlooked. It’s a luxury experience not operated by Amtrak, with Moab and Denver typical end points. There are a variety of customization options, glass-dome coach cars, and overnight stays in hotels (not on the train), making it a comfortable multi-day train adventure with amazing scenery.
Coast Starlight
The Coast Starlight is a must-do route on the West Coast and an excellent choice for first-time long-distance train travelers. This scenic two-day, one-night journey links Southern California’s beaches with the mountains and forests of the Pacific Northwest, with the option to use airports in Los Angeles, Burbank, Santa Barbara, Portland, and Seattle. Summer is the most popular time to ride, so book early or plan your trip before Memorial Day weekend or just after Labor Day weekend for fewer crowds.
Saguaro National Park
Saguaro National Park in Southern Arizona has giant cacti, hiking trails, and stunning sunsets that you can reach via the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle Amtrak routes. The closest Amtrak station is in Tucson and you’ll need to rent a car there (drive time is about 30 minutes). The nearby Enterprise offers pick-up service with a reservation or check out Turo. While in the area, consider visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and be sure to try the famous Sonoran-style Mexican food (food tours are a great way to taste local dishes).
Maine Day Trip from Boston
Many people don’t realize that day trips to Maine from Boston are easy — and don’t require a car. Multiple Downeaster trains depart from Boston’s North Station each day, with one-way travel times ranging from about two hours (Wells and Saco) to 3.5 hours (Brunswick). Portland is the most popular destination (only 2.5 hours from Boston), but you’ll need to use rideshare after you arrive. The most walkable destinations for a quick trip are Saco and Old Orchard Beach.
USA’s 250th birthday party in Philadelphia
Philadelphia will be the center of the USA’s 250th birthday celebrations in 2026, making it one of the top destinations to visit by train. The city will host events throughout the year, from special exhibitions at historic sites to citywide festivals. July 4th will be especially epic with a FIFA World Cup match. Choose from many Amtrak, SEPTA and NJ Transit trains to reach the historic 30th Street Station, which is conveniently located near all the action. Tip: Use Google Maps to view all your train options.
Mardi Gras in New Orleans
In 2026, the weekend before Fat Tuesday overlaps with Presidents Day weekend, meaning Mardi Gras in New Orleans will likely be even more crowded than usual. To avoid expensive flights, heavy car traffic, and rideshare surge pricing, consider arriving by train instead. Four Amtrak routes travel to the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, which is within walking distance of numerous hotels and the French Quarter.
Winter Park Resort
Tucked away in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the Winter Park Resort is famous for its world-class ski slopes and alpine slide. It’s an easy getaway from Denver, with a travel time of only 2.5 hours on the seasonal Winter Park Express train and the long-distance California Zephyr. The Winter Park Express stops directly at the resort in the winter months while the California Zephyr stops daily at the Fraser-Winter Park Station, which has free bus transportation to the resort.
Delray Beach, FL
If you’re looking for a Florida beach vacation away from the city crowds, Delray Beach is a train-friendly destination to consider. Known as the “Village by the Sea,” the downtown area has restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries, and events. From there, you can walk to Delray Municipal Beach, making it easy to get around without a car. Book tickets on the Floridian or Silver Meteor routes to get here, and plan on using rideshare after you arrive to reach your hotel or vacation rental.
Roanoke, VA
In Southern Virginia, Roanoke is a hidden gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s an easy and scenic getaway on the Northeast Regional route as you transition from foothills to distant mountain views. After you arrive, walk to the historic Hotel Roanoke for a charming and convenient stay. A variety of restaurants, museums (including the Virginia Museum of Transportation) and the historic farmers market are also in walking distance of the train station.
Hermann, MO
Settled by Germans in the 1800s, Hermann is a riverfront town that looks and feels like a European village. It’s ideal for wine lovers, history fans, couples looking for a cozy getaway, and anyone who wants to experience Oktoberfest. To get there by train, book tickets on the Missouri River Runner, which departs from cities including St. Louis and Kansas City. Short day trips are possible or stay overnight; the Inn at Hermanoff and the White House Hotel are closest to the Amtrak station or choose from many vacation rentals.
