Tips and Things to Know
- Old Town Alexandria is next to Washington D.C. and is an alternate place to stay if you’re visiting the nation’s capital. There is a Metro train station and water taxis that go to the National Harbor, The Wharf and Georgetown.
- The Charlottesville station is in walking distance of the University of Virginia and a historic, pedestrian-friendly downtown. With a rental car, you can drive to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. There are also guided day trips to Monticello and local wineries.
- Visit Williamsburg, Virginia to explore the Colonial Williamsburg living museum for an immersive step back in time. If amusement parks are more your thing, request a Lyft or Uber car at the Amtrak station and travel 15 minutes for a day of fun at Busch Gardens.
- Former President Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia, a stop on the Cardinal route. You can check out his presidential library and museum along with an antique automobile museum, festivals and the world’s only replica of Shakepeare’s indoor theatre.
- Roanoke is a charming destination in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can walk to restaurants and shops downtown, and to a historic hotel next to the station.
- Visit Manassas, Virginia for a historic downtown next to the Amtrak station and to visit the Manassas National Battlefield Park (20-minute drive away).
- The closest stop to Virginia Beach is Norfolk. Lyft and Uber are great ways to reach oceanfront destinations. You can also select Virginia Beach as your destination when booking your tickets for a bus transfer from Amtrak.
- Richmond is a great city for historic sights, museums, gardens and outdoor adventures. Highlights include whitewater rafting, the Maymont mansion and gardens, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (which is especially popular in the spring), and the White House of the Confederacy.
