Amtrak’s San Joaquins route is in the California Central Valley with major stops at Oakland, Sacramento, Stockton and Bakersfield. Views are primarily of residential and agricultural areas, and many stations provide easy access to museums. San Joaquins is also the train that travels closest to Yosemite National Park (about 1.5 hours away from the Madera or Fresno station via car or Amtrak bus connections are available at the Fresno and Merced stops).

Things to Know

  • Free WiFi and cafe (but no dining car) on all trains (multiple trains per day)
  • There is thruway bus service to downtown San Francisco, which you can also use to reach the SFO Airport.
  • There are two new morning express trains from Fresno to Sacramento
  • You might have to transfer to a bus depending on your destination and train number you are on, so be sure to look at the schedule carefully (it’s a bit complicated)
