Zion National Park is in Utah, closest to the Flagstaff Amtrak Station on the Southwest Chief route. Drive time is about four hours, and you’ll need to rent a car in Flagstaff to continue your journey.  Enterprise and Budget car rental offices are near the Amtrak station and both companies can pick you up from the station, but call ahead and confirm and arrange for pick up before your trip.

Things to Know

  • There is one train per day in each direction
  • Without delays, trains heading west toward California arrive at Flagstaff around 8:30 p.m., so you’ll need to arrange for overnight accommodations in order to rent a car the next day. Places to stay closest to the station (and a short walk away) are Rodeway Inn, Weatherford Hotel, Residence Inn, Motel DeBeau and the Grand Canyon International Hostel.
  • Without delays, trains heading east arrive in Flagstaff just after 4 a.m., so there will be some time to kill before the rental car companies open. There are restaurants in walking distance, including The Tourist Home Cafe that opens at 6 a.m. along with the Downtown Diner (also opens at 6 a.m. Monday-Saturday, but confirm hours in advance). The Budget rental car location opens first at 7 a.m. on weekdays. It also opens first on Saturdays.
