Amtrak to Portland, Oregon

Three Amtrak routes travel to and from Portland: Amtrak Cascades, Coast Starlight and Empire Builder. Empire Builder is a cross-country route that travel across Montana and the Upper Midwest, and the other two routes travel along the West Coast with stops in major cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver B.C.

Portland Union Station Overview

Trains arrive at Portland Union Station, 800 NW Sixth Avenue (view map). The station is in the Pearl District and near downtown Portland. You can walk less than 10 minutes to reach several hotels, including the Residence Inn Pearl District and Harlow Hotel, as well as the NW 9th & Love Joy streetcar stop.

Things to Know

  • There are good arrival times in Portland if no major delays.
  • WiFi is available on the Cascades route (not available on the other Portland routes).
  • There is only one Empire Builder and one Coast Starlight train that arrives in Portland each day, but multiple trains on the Cascades route.

Why Visit Portland

Portland, Oregon is a great destination for outdoor lovers, foodies, and beer enthusiasts. The city is full of gardens, parks, food carts, and craft beer. Plus, there are many guided day trips to beautiful nature areas, including the Oregon coast, Columbia River Gorge, and Mt. Hood.

Plan your visit in mid-March to early April to see cherry blossoms, otherwise, the best time to visit is June-September.

  • Pearl District: The Amtrak station is in this neighborhood, making it easy to walk to hotels.
  • Northwest District: Near the International Rose Test Garden and Washington Park
  • Downtown: Access to all light rail lines and near Powell’s City of Books
