Milwaukee, Wisconsin has frequent Amtrak service to and from Chicago via the Hiawatha route, or connect with the long-distance Empire Builder trains for service from cities in Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and Washington. Trip time from Chicago is only 1.5 hours, and St. Paul-Minneapolis is about six hours away via train.

Things to Know

  • Hiawatha trains only travel between Chicago and Milwaukee and there are many departures each day.
  • Only two Empire Builder trains stop in Milwaukee each day (one in each direction) and these trains do not have WiFi (book your trip on a Hiawatha train if WiFi is preferred)
  • Eastbound trains arrive in Milwaukee around 2 p.m. if not delayed.
  • There is one late-night Chicago train departure on Friday nights
