There are two Amtrak stations near the San Francisco International Airport (SFO): Hayward and Emeryville. Both are about a 30-minute drive away from the airport, and the best station for your trip will depend on your Amtrak route and preferred mode of travel. Read on to learn about your options.
Emeryville and SFO
Trains on the Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, Coast Starlight (with service to L.A.) and California Zephr Amtrak routes stop at the Emeryville Amtrak Station.
The other perk of Emeryville is that there are more transit options for getting to and from the San Francisco International Airport. BART is the local transit agency that has bus and rail service in the area. There is a rail station at the airport and the MacArthur Station is about a 15-minute car or bus ride away from Emeryville Amtrak Station. You can connect with BART bus 57 or the Shellmound – Powell Emery-Go-Round bus to get to and from the Amtrak station or request an Uber or Lyft car.
Amtrak “thruway” bus service is also available in downtown San Francisco, so you can take BART from the airport to connect with an Amtrak bus to Emeryville, or if you are arriving at Emeryville, get on the thruway bus then get on BART once in the downtown area. Make sure when booking your Amtrak tickets that you use the SFF (San Franciso Financial District) station to get your bus connection. The Embarcadero BART Station is a short walk from the Amtrak bus stop. Look for the yellow/Antioch line for the connection with the airport.
Hayward and SFO
Hayward Station is about a 30-minute car commute away and only provides a connection to the Capitol Corridor route with service to and from major cities including San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento. You can avoid potential traffic in downtown San Francisco and this option is better if your start or end station is on the Capitol Corridor route. Check all the various ground transportation options to Hayward if you prefer not to use a taxi, Uber or Lyft to get between Amtrak and the airport.
