Pacific Surfliner in San Diego

Traveling from Los Angeles to San Diego by train is very scenic (and easy). The Pacific Surfliner route travels between the two cities multiple times per day along the Pacific Ocean, and you can do a day trip or stay for a night or longer. Here’s what you need to know when planning your trip.

Ticket Options

When booking your tickets, you can choose coach or business class seats. Business class tickets are fully refundable if cancelled before departure and perks include a larger seat with extra legroom. In both cases, seats are unassigned.

Tip: For views of the ocean, sit on the right side of the train.

Station Options

There are two Amtrak stations in San Diego: Santa Fe Depot and Old Town Transit Center. The Santa Fe Depot is in downtown San Diego near the Gaslamp Quarter and the Old Town Transit Center is closest to the San Diego International Airport, SeaWorld and Mission Bay.

Travel Time

Train travel time from Los Angeles Union Station to San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot is about three hours, only 30 minutes longer than driving. If you travel to the Old Town Transit Center instead, you’ll exit the train 20 minutes faster. Note that both stations are equally distant from the San Diego Zoo.

Food & Amenities

Pacific Surfliner trains have free Wifi, power outlets at seats, and a café car that sells food and alcohol. You can also bring on board or check specialty items including bikes, surfboards and golf clubs. Visit Amtrak.com to view guidelines.

Departure from L.A.

Pacific Surfliner trains depart from the Los Angeles Union Station on the edge of downtown (view map). It is easiest to get a ride to the station, but there is also short-term and overnight parking available.
